Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
