2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Comes After Poor Response
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a more defined direction.
The president stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to address player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
The news echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock development group.
Below is the full message from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I understand you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”
With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the input to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our fans.
The trust in this project grows every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After some time of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and background in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having spent the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in welcoming him soon. We are all excited to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the weeks to come.
David
Background of the New Head
The appointee presently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Concept
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Face the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The choice is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as development continues.
